Presenting problem: Wedding Speech Help
Treatment modality: BWRT®
Number of sessions: 1
H booked in for help to overcome the public-speaking nerves which had plagued him all his life.
With his daughter’s wedding coming up, he desperately wanted to be able to give a speech at the reception afterwards. Even though his daughter had told him that she understood, and did not expect her father to stand and talk in front of everybody, H decided that enough was enough and resolved to get professional wedding speech help.
During the pre-therapy discussion, H explained that he’d had a speech impediment as a child and underwent specialist speech therapy for a while. Even though this therapy had helped, H would still get ‘tongue tied’ when nervous, so that he trip would over his words when trying to speak.
In exploring his childhood further, H became upset when recalling how little confidence he’d had growing up. He remembered giving a presentation at high school during which he had been so overwhelmed with panic and fear that he had given up and sat back down without reaching the end.
Even before then, H said he had been a nervous, shy child, clearly recalling an occasion early in his schooldays when other children had made unkind comments about him. He described feeling inferior to everyone else and not welcome to join the other children at a large, round, table they shared.
Knowing how he would prefer to respond when standing up to give a speech at his daughter’s wedding the following month, we set to work using BWRT® to re-route the neural pathways in the brain, so that internal and environmental factors would not trigger the old fear-response.
At the end of the session, H said he was going to test out the success of the therapy by taking a lead in presenting the next route to his cycling club – something he had always actively avoided taking a turn in.
Two weeks later, H got in touch to say that he had felt confident enough to plan and present the cycle route to his club, and was feeling so much better about the impending wedding that he had even written a speech. A month after BWRT®, H found himself tapping the side of his champagne glass with a knife as he stood up to tell his friends and family how proud he was of his daughter, reading his speech out loud and clear all the way to the end, accompanied by a happy tear in his eye.
