Presenting problem: Cat Phobia
Treatment modality: BWRT®
Number of sessions: 1
M has a life-long phobia of cats which he says stops him from living life to the full.
Over the years, he has tried a number of different therapies, without success. He has agreed to accompany his wife on an overseas trip to a country known for its proliferation of feral cats, and is feeling desperate.
M has visited this country before and is already feeling on edge, worrying about when and where a cat might suddenly appear, and dreading the idea of being stuck inside hot and sticky restaurants, knowing he will feel too anxious to join his fellow diners outside in the cooling breeze.
Excursions to public places are out of the question.
We discuss what it is that troubles M most about cats, and he tells me he cannot bear the thought of one touching him. Worse still, that a cat might jump on him.
He describes how the curves of a cat’s movement agitates him and that his anxiety increases in direct proportion to the creature’s proximity. M says the tipping point, when anxiety will escalate to a full panic attack, is if a cat becomes close enough to brush against his legs.
A week after our therapy session my phone pinged and up popped a photo of a man sitting at a pavement cafe, in the sunshine. It was M! As I peered closer I could see the outlines of cats, a whole bunch of them sheltering in the shadows, stretching out beyond the picture.
In the accompanying caption M excitedly declares his amazement, happiness and profuse thanks, which happens to be the exact same sentiments his sister, J, expresses, when she rings me a short while after her brother returns home.
J tells me that, for the first time ever, M has visited her at her home, something he had refused to do until now because – you guessed it – she has always kept cats. Such is J’s astonishment at her brother’s transformation that, before the call is over, she makes an appointment to deal with her own phobia, a fear of vomiting. But that, of course, is another story…
